My Totally Subjective Rating System: A Guide

I plan to begin posting reviews soon (Covid makes writer’s block so much more intense), but before I do, I wanted to give some insight into the scale I’ll be using. Specifically, I’ll be leveraging a 5-star system and each of those stars means something a little different.

As such, I’ve created this nifty little graphic to explain:

Five Star Rating System Key (1)

To provide a text version:

1 Star = Did not finish within the 1st half of the book.

2 Stars = Did not finish within the 2nd half of the book.

3 Stars = Finished, but don’t recommend.

4  Stars = Finished, but do recommend.

5 Stars = Finished and it is now a new favorite.

*I reserve the right to add or subtract a half of a star if I find myself to be indecisive with any of these reviews, which will happen.*

If you peruse my Goodreads, my average rating is around 4.3, so I tend to like and want to recommend a lot of the books that I finish. However, there are a couple of caveats to that.

First and foremost, I have DNFd a lot of books and they do not show up on my Goodreads. I intend to be more forthcoming with my DNF shelf, so that will be accounted for within this review schema.

Second, I’ve given a lot of books 5 stars that are not necessarily favorites. So, moving forward, I am likely to hover more towards those 3/4 star ratings.

I’m looking forward to getting started!
